Abstract:Duringthe period of Principate, the Roman army underwent two important changes. Firstly, the distinction betweenlegionesandauxiliabecame less and less distinguishable in that both were increasingly made up of men locally recruited. Secondly, the imperial army became more and more settled, which made the army look like a society entire of itself and the area it occupied separate from the civil districts. These two trends, in turn, made the non-military functions of the imperial army stand out in bold relief. The study of Roman garrison in Britain shows that the impact of the army lies mainly in its important part in propelling the process of urbanization, in stimulating the agricultural development in the south of Britain where the main burden of corn supply to the north was imposed, and in popularizing the Roman citizenship.
